Meat often refers to fresh pork, so vegetarians can be given ham, bacon, chicken or beef if they say they don't eat "meat". So, I strongly recommend any vegetarian travelers to the area to learn the correct Chinese word for vegetarian.
It's quite easy to find vegan restaurants though; jus look out for a left-pointing swastika.
This sign should read something like: "Healthy, long-life vegetarian food".
